J-POWER invests in Active Surfaces Driving New Business Creation Through Next-Generation Solar
Tokyo, Japan / Woburn, MA, USA - October 24 2025 - Electric Power Development Co., Ltd. (“J-POWER,” headquartered in Chuo-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Hitoshi Kanno) has made an investment in Active Surfaces, Inc. (“Active Surfaces”; Head Office: Massachusetts, U.S.A.; CEO: Shiv Bhakta).
Active Surfaces is a startup founded in 2022 based on over ten years of research and patents accumulated at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Active Surfaces develops ultra-light, flexible perovskite solar modules that peel-and-stick onto roofs, walls, and curved surfaces, cutting installation costs by up to 10x and unlocking areas inaccessible to heavy, glass-packaged panels. The company has demonstrated excellent durability under real-world conditions such as high temperature and high humidity. Its MIT-developed technology has achieved a high level of performance, with a power conversion efficiency of over 25.2% and durability exceeding 10 years, certified by the NREL*¹.
*1 NREL: The National Renewable Energy Laboratory, under the United States Department of Energy.
On the manufacturing side, the company has realized high yield and exceptional capital efficiency through a high-speed roll-to-roll*² process using commodity materials, automated, and low-labor production lines. It also possesses proprietary encapsulation technology that protects against degradation caused by oxygen and moisture, and advanced coating control that ensures uniformity in film quality. These innovations are expected to help overcome the three major challenges commonly associated with perovskite solar cells: scalability, durability, and cost.
*2 Roll-to-roll process: A continuous manufacturing method in which film is processed in a rolled format from input to output, enabling efficient mass production.

Through this investment, J-POWER will collaborate with Active Surfaces to conduct pilot tests utilizing the company’s products. As the next step, J-POWER aims to create new businesses by utilizing diverse perovskite solar cell products suited to various installation environments. As stated in “J-POWER BLUE MISSION 2050”, J-POWER will continue accelerating the deployment of innovative renewable energy technologies toward achieving carbon neutrality.
